Program Information

This updated master’s degree is designed for educators who want to deepen their knowledge and practice in language and literacy instruction. It is ideal for classroom teachers with at least one year of teaching experience and those who are or want to become reading or multilingual specialists or literacy and instructional coaches. Graduates will leave with a strong understanding of literacy research and theory and effective teaching of language, reading, and writing.

*This program does not lead to the issuance of a Washington State Residency Teacher Certificate

The MEd – Language and Literacy has three main components:

  • Core courses shared by all students
  • Study in a concentration area which may include:
    • Digital and Media Literacy for teachers certificate
    • ELL/Bilingual Endorsement sequence
    • Reading Endorsement sequence
    • Individualized concentration designed with an advisor
  • Master’s project with options to do research, submit materials for National Board certification or to write for leadership and publication.

This is a cohort program.  We will not be admitting for the 2023-24 academic year.

Application Requirements

All applicants must complete the Graduate School's ApplyWeb application. Within the application, you will be prompted to upload an unofficial transcript from each institution attended.

The Graduate School Application Fee is $100, paid at the time of application submission.

Additional application materials are specified below. Applications will not be forwarded to the department for review until all required materials have been received by the Graduate School.

International Applicants: Please view information regarding Degree Equivalency, English Language Proficiency and student VISA requirements.

The Language and Literacy Program starts a new cohort in the Winter Quarter of odd-numbered years. Admission may be available for Fall or Spring Quarter with adviser permission. For more information, please contact Dr. Tracy Coskie (360-650-2164).

  • Statement of Purpose: Brief (not to exceed 1 page) 300‐500 word statement of personal career goals and reasons for seeking the M.Ed
