Research on Compulsory Education Public Schools in Remote, Mountainous Areas of Western China and the Move Towards Urbanization

During this presentation, Dr. Wei Jiao will present findings from her research on Compulsory Education Public Schools in remote, mountainous areas in the Western part of China.  She will describe how Chinese educational policy has been to consolidate and close public schools in rural, mountain areas and mandate that children attend schools in neighboring urban areas.  Dr. Jiao will discuss the consequences of these policies and also present suggestions for changes to the current policy.  This project has been funded by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China.
