About the Program

This program leads to an endorsement in P-12 Reading based on Washington State P-12 Reading Endorsement Competencies. All classes are offered online in the evenings. This program is the only one at WWU that allows students to earn a P-12 Reading Endorsement from the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI).

The Reading Endorsement is offered in two formats for teachers who hold a valid and endorsable Washington State teacher's certificate.

  1. Reading Endorsement only (20 credits)

The Reading Endorsement stand-alone option prepares teachers to be effective literacy instructors, specialists, and coaches, as well as leaders prepared support assessment and curriculum decisions in literacy. The program can be completed in five consecutive quarters – beginning in fall. Students should plan for class one evening per week.

  2. Combined MEd in Language and Literacy program (45 credits)

The combined M.Ed. in Language and Literacy program is appropriate for those who do not already hold a Master’s degree and who have at least one year of teaching experience. As part of this M.Ed. program, students have the opportunity to earn their certificate in media and digital literacy, a WA State endorsement in reading, and/or National Board certification. The program can be completed in six consecutive quarters – beginning in fall of even numbered years (e.g., 2024, 2026). Students should plan for class two evenings per week.
