Ecopsychology Minor

What is Ecopsychology?

The Minor Program in Ecopsychology is an interdisciplinary plan of study that provides students the opportunity to become familiar with theoretical, historical, and comparative perspectives in Ecopsychology and its practice. This course of study complements majors in any of the disciplines and is focused on learning about the promotion of health and understanding our planet as a living system.

If you are interested in learning more about ecosystems, how working in and connecting to the natural world can improve one’s health, then a Minor in Ecopsychology would be a good fit for you. It will provide you with a rich foundation if you wish to pursue career paths such as counseling, environmental journalism, medicine, social work, outdoor education, filmmaking, environmental policy, nature writing, recreational therapy, urban planning, land stewardship, caring for youth and elders, and many more.

  • Develop a basic understanding of the fundamental principles of ecopsychology and its applied practice ecotherapy.
  • Understand the difference between “mental health” and holistic health from ecologically centered perspectives.
  • Understand the connection between the disenfranchisement of people and its connection to ecologies of harm (sickness in ecosystems)
  • Cultivate and create personal practices that connect each of us to a sense of place and promote ecosystemic repair.

Complete the prerequisite

Students who are interested in pursuing a minor in Ecopsychology will need to complete one of the following prerequisites: HSP 410 Mental Health: Individuals and Systems OR ANTH 201 Introduction to Cultural Anthropology.

Declare the Ecopsychology Minor

Please email Dr. Nicole Torres and state your interest and reasoning for pursuing an ecopsychology minor. Once that has been completed, then complete the Minor Declaration form

Foundation Core - 10 Credits

  • HSP 467 Introduction to Ecopsychology
  • HSP 440* Seminar and Internship

Note: Other courses may count in place of HSP 
*440 under advisement. Only 5 credits of HSP 440 may count towards the minor.

Electives (15 credits)

Complete a minimum of 15 credits from a selection of courses found in the University Catalog
