Can I forward my WWU email to an external address?

Technically it is possible to forward your email by going to the settings of your Office 365 account, but we do not recommend forwarding your email for the following reasons:

  1. Employee email should not be forwarded because doing so may violate State records retention laws related to public information and could put sensitive information at risk. 
  2. Students who are not also employees may forward their university email, but once email is forwarded the IT Help Desk is unable to provide any assistance with lost email messages. University departments will only use the @wwu.edu address for official correspondence with students. If you forward your email you are still responsible for receiving and acting upon important messages from the Office of the Registrar, Financial Aid, the Student Business Office, your academic program department, and more. 
  3. Your Office 365 accounts comes with much more than just email! You also get 1 terabyte of cloud storage with OneDrive for Business, Office 365 web apps, and the ability to install Microsoft Office 2016 for Windows and macOS.   4. Use a mail app instead of forwarding. Many students prefer to keep their university email separate from their personal email, and the recommended Outlook app for Android and iOS helps you easily check your university email and calendar from your mobile device. If you prefer to have one app that shows you all of your email, that is still possible to do without forwarding your email. There are multiple mobile device mail apps, including the native iOS app, that can display multiple accounts in a unified Inbox. They also allow you to filter the view to see only your University mailbox or your personal mailbox. You can also use some apps to view your university calendar and your personal calendar in the same view. 

University Policy POL-U7100.02 states, "Students may have email electronically redirected from their official university email accounts to another account (e.g., @aol.com, @hotmail.com, or an address on a departmental server), but they do so at their own risk. These risks can include lost mail or lost attachments due to: Being over quota at the remote site; Loss of remote service for business reasons; or Delayed delivery."
