Master in Teaching, Bellingham

The Master in Teaching (MIT) program is designed for candidates who wish to complete a master’s degree while gaining state of Washington residency certification to teach at the secondary level (middle and high school). The program prepares future MIT secondary education teachers with the knowledge, field experience, and professional skills needed to support student success in today's classrooms.   Our comprehensive MIT secondary education program is firmly backed by current research of effective teaching and promoting student learning.

Western's MIT program has a strong social justice focus and we are looking to recruit teacher candidates that have a commitment to addressing inequities in the schooling system and are looking to deepen their understanding of privilege, equity, and multicultural education. Applicants should be able to demonstrate this commitment and articulate their goals and areas for growth in their application materials—in submitted applications and, if offered an interview, through that process, as well. You are encouraged to be familiar with our Guiding Principles. 

Preparing Tomorrow's MIT Teachers

Our program helps aspiring educators develop effective instructional strategies, classroom leadership skills, and a commitment to educational equity. Through coursework, field experiences, and student teaching, teacher candidates in our MIT Secondary Education program gain practical experience that prepares them for careers throughout Washington State.

The Bellingham spring start offers our MIT 'classic' program that can be completed in five academic quarters, including the student teaching (internship). The Bellingham fall start pathway, the MIT/MLE (Multilingual Ed.) program, now includes earning an English Language Learner or Bilingual Education additional endorsement in a six quarter sequence.

• Prepare teachers in a culture of learning that advance knowledge, honor diversities, and promote social justice;
• model core concepts in teaching and learning that develop analytic and creative thinking which lead to best practices in teaching professions;
• cultivate student competence through extensive field experiences to develop teachers who are change agents who can understand and work within existing structures to transform systems;
• construct, transform, and convey knowledge by integrating research, theory, and practice along with culturally competent viewpoints and perspectives;
• develop collaborative partnerships that promote the social and emotional well-being of students, families, and the community;
• recommend successful candidates for Washington State Residency Teaching Certificate in their endorsement area(s).
