Program Information

The Master in Teaching (MIT) program is designed for candidates who wish to complete a master’s degree while gaining state of Washington residency certification to teach at the secondary level (middle and high school). Our comprehensive MIT program is firmly backed by current research of effective teaching and promoting student learning. The Bellingham MIT program can be completed in five quarters, including the student teaching (internship)- MIT course sequence.

Our MIT program has a strong social justice focus and we are looking to recruit teacher candidates that have a commitment to addressing inequities in the schooling system and are looking to deepen their understanding of privilege, equity, and multicultural education. Applicants should be able to demonstrate this commitment and articulate their goals and areas for growth in their application materials—in submitted applications and, if offered an interview, through that process, as well. You are encouraged to be familiar with our Guiding Principles

Tentatively beginning in fall 2026, our fall quarter applicants to the Bellingham Master in Teaching program will change to 'Master in Teaching, Multilingual Education' (MIT/MLE) which will include earning an English Language Learner or Bilingual Education additional endorsement.  Future spring quarter applicants will be applying to the Master in Teaching program, five quarter sequence, without the MLE.

The MIT/MLE pathway can be completed in six quarters, including the student teaching (internship). It will be open to applicants in the Secondary Education MIT-approved content areas, and is designed to holistically address the knowledge, skills, and dispositions that secondary teachers need to support multilingual learners in their classes, which many school districts are requesting with new teacher hires. Admissions criteria and application processes will be the same for all MIT candidates.
