Important information and requirements for admissions into the Special Education Programs are outlined below, please read thoroughly.

These programs lead to Teacher Certification which is necessary for teaching in the WA State public school system:

 

This program enables the applicant to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Education and work as a para-educator or in the private sector:

Applicants for a Teacher Certification Program must meet the following:

  • Complete a minimum of 45 graded credits by the application due date. This does not apply to transfer applicants with an AA/DTA. AP (minimum score of 3) and IB (minimum score of 4) credits count toward the 45 credits. AP science scores are not accepted. 

  • 2.75 GPA (cumulative or last 45+ credits). Per request, transcripts will be reviewed for purposes of GPA calculation. Email unofficial transcripts to TeacherEd.Admission@wwu.edu.

  • West-B requirement; applicants may not be admitted without meeting this requirement.

  • English composition course (ENG 101) with minimum grade of B-.  Exams that meet this requirement:
    • AP English Literature or Language, minimum score of 4.
    • IB English, minimum score of 4.

Applicants for a Teacher Certification Program should, but are not required to, complete program pre-requisites before applying:

  • MATH 112; this is a GUR
    • Minimum grade of C, OR ALEKS Math Placement Assessment with a minimum score of 45 required
    • A course more than 5 years old will not be honored
    • An intermediate college Algebra course at another institution may substitute (Whatcom and Skagit CC =  Math 99)
  • SCED 201 and all other Science GURs. **Not required for SPED + Content Endorsement program.
    • Minimum grade of C
    • WWU students must request an override code for SCED 201 - contact Lori Torres
    • Community College equivalents to SCED 201 = Everett: NAT S 107, Skagit: PHYS 111, Whatcom: PHYSC 104
  • LING 201; this is a GUR. Alternatives ENG 370 and ELL 431 these are not GURs.
    • Minimum grade of C

Applicants for Exceptionality and Disability, Bachelor of Arts in Education (BAE) must meet the following:

  • Complete a minimum of 45 graded credits by the application due date. This does not apply to transfer applicants with an AA/DTA. AP (minimum score of 3) and IB (minimum score of 4) credits count toward the 45 credits. AP science scores are not accepted. 

  • 2.50 GPA (cumulative or last 45+ credits). Per request, transcripts will be reviewed for purposes of GPA calculation. Email unofficial transcripts to TeacherEd.Admission@wwu.edu.

  • English composition course (ENG 101) with minimum grade of B-.  Exams that meet this requirement:
    • AP English Literature or Language, minimum score of 4.
    • IB English, minimum score of 4.

Submit an Application

Due Dates:

  • Notes: Special Education Early Childhood only admits fall term; All other majors admit Fall, Winter and Spring.
    • Fall Admission - March 1
    • Winter Admission - October 1
    • Spring Admission - January 15
  • Submit complete application to the Teacher Education Admission Office in MH 150 (contact information below).
  • Late applications will be accepted on a space available basis.
  • If you are not a WWU student, you must also apply to WWU. This is a separate application with different due dates!!

Application Review and Decisions

  • All applicants who meet the minimum requirements and submit a completed application will have their application reviewed by the Special Education faculty.
  • Applications are evaluated to determine the most qualified applicants.
  • The application process takes approximately 4 weeks to complete. Students will be notified by email of admissions decision.
