Interested Students

Important information and requirements for admissions into the Special Education Programs is outlined below, please read thoroughly.

These programs lead to Teacher Certification which is necessary for teaching in the WA State public school system:

 

This program enables the applicant to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Education and work as a para-educator or in the private sector:

Applicants for a Teacher Certification Program must meet the following:

  • Complete a minimum of 45 graded credits by the application due date. This does not apply to transfer applicants with an AA/DTA. AP (minimum score of 3) and IB (minimum score of 4) credits count toward the 45 credits. AP science scores are not accepted. 

  • 2.75 GPA (cumulative or last 45+ credits). Per request, transcripts will be reviewed for purposes of GPA calculation. Email unofficial transcripts to TeacherEd.Admission@wwu.edu.

  • West-B requirement; applicants may not be admitted without meeting this requirement.

  • English composition course (ENG 101) with minimum grade of B-.  Exams that meet this requirement:
    • AP English Literature or Language, minimum score of 4.
    • IB English, minimum score of 4.

Applicants for a Teacher Certification Program should complete program pre-requisites before applying:

  • MATH 112; this is a GUR
    • Minimum grade of C, OR WWU Math Placement Test (General) with a minimum score of 150 required
    • A course more than 5 years old will not be honored
    • For non-WWU students  an intermediate college Algebra course will subsitute (Whatcom and Skagit CC this is Math 99)
  • SCED 201; this is a GUR. **Not required for SPED + Content Endorsement program.
    • Minimum grade of C
    • WWU students must request an override code for SCED 201 - contact Lori Torres
    • Community College equivalents = Everett CC NAT S 107, Skagit CC PHYS 111, Whatcom CC PHYSC 104
  • LING 201; this is a GUR. 
    • Minimum grade of C

Applicants for Exceptionality and Disability, Bachelor of Arts in Education (BAE) must meet the following:

  • Complete a minimum of 45 graded credits by the application due date. This does not apply to transfer applicants with an AA/DTA. AP (minimum score of 3) and IB (minimum score of 4) credits count toward the 45 credits. AP science scores are not accepted. 

  • 2.50 GPA (cumulative or last 45+ credits). Per request, transcripts will be reviewed for purposes of GPA calculation. Email unofficial transcripts to TeacherEd.Admission@wwu.edu.

  • English composition course (ENG 101) with minimum grade of B-.  Exams that meet this requirement:
    • AP English Literature or Language, minimum score of 4.
    • IB English, minimum score of 4.

Submit an Application

Due Dates:

  • Notes: Early Childhood option only admits fall term; All other options admit all three terms.
    • Fall Admission - March 1
    • Winter Admission - October 1
    • Spring Admission - January 15
  • Submit complete application to the Teacher Education Admission Office (contact information below).
  • Late applications will be accepted on a space available basis.
  • If you are not a WWU student, you must also apply to WWU. That is a separate application and the due date for fall transfers and post-bac students to WWU is March 1 (Early Childhood is April 1).

Application Review and Decisions

  • All applicants who meet the minimum requirements and submit a completed application will have that application reviewed by the Special Education faculty.
  • Applications are evaluated to determine the most qualified applicants.
  • The application process takes approximately 4 weeks to complete. Students will be notified by email of admissions decision.
