Add-On Endorsements for Teachers

Washington State has recently changed the way that certified teachers may add endorsements. Most endorsements may now be added via content testing. Please see the OSPI Adding an Endorsement information page for a list of these endorsements.

There are now 2 primary options on how to add an endorsement:

Option 1: Content Test ONLY

Apply for the endorsement through OSPI eCertification after taking and passing the corresponding WEST-E or NES exam. For a list of the endorsements available to be added via this option please refer to the website k12.wa.us.

Option 2: Program + Content Test

The endorsements eligible to be added through the program + testing option are as follows:

  • Elementary Education
  • Special Education
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Early Childhood Special Education
  • Reading
  • English Language Learners
  • Bilingual

Western Washington University Endorsement Programs are designed around majors, minors, or stand-alone curricula that align with Washington State endorsement competencies.  For more information regarding adding an endorsement via this option, please contact the Certification Office at cert@wwu.edu.

National Board Certification

Teachers may add a Washington State endorsement in the subject area and age range indicated on their National Board for Professional Teacher Standards (NBPTS) certificate, if it is aligned with one of these endorsement areas.
