Internship Information - Secondary Education

Internship Sequence

Bellingham secondary candidates complete one quarter of internship work in the same classroom either Fall or Winter quarter.

  • Fall quarter full time internship: Starts when teachers return to work and ends after 14 full teaching weeks (with students) are completed. That end date will vary by district assignment. In most circumstances, this will be mid-December.  Interns will work full time in the classroom and will follow the school district's calendar and must log at least 450 hours during this quarter.
  • Winter quarter full time internship: Starts when teachers return to work in early-January and ends after 14 full teaching weeks (with students) are completed. That end date will vary by district assignment. In most circumstances, this will be mid-April after the district spring break.  Interns will work full time in the classroom and will follow the school district's calendar and must log at least 450 hours during this quarter.

Everett MIT candidates complete two quarters of internship work in the same classroom:

  • Quarter 1. Practicum--Fall. Officially starts when the WWU quarter begins.  Interns will spend at least 25 hours in the classroom.  Intern's schedule should be arranged between intern and cooperating teacher.
  • Quarter 2. Full time internship--Winter. Starts when teachers return to work in early-January and ends after 14 full teaching weeks (with students) are completed. That end date will vary by district assignment. In most circumstances, this will be mid-April after the district spring break.  Interns will work full time in the classroom and will follow the school district's calendar and must log at least 450 hours during this quarter.

Important Note: Secondary candidates participating in the graduation ceremony at the end of winter term may be required to return to their student teaching classroom after graduation to complete the internship. This may result in an incomplete grade until all program and state requirements are met. An incomplete grade will not hinder graduation but degree completion will remain pending until the grade is changed to an S for successful.
