Internship Sequence

Bellingham Secondary

Bellingham Secondary candidates complete one quarter in a full-time (1.0 FTE) internship placement. The internship can be completed in Fall or Winter quarter.

  • Fall quarter full time internship: Starts when teachers return to work and ends after 14 full teaching weeks (with students) are completed. That end date will vary by district assignment. In most circumstances, this will be mid-December.  Interns will work full time in the classroom and will follow the school district's calendar and must log at least 450 hours during this quarter.

  • Winter quarter full time internship: Starts when teachers return to work in early January and ends after 14 full teaching weeks (with students) are completed. That end date will vary by district assignment. In most circumstances, this will be mid-April after the district spring break.  Interns will work full time in the classroom and will follow the school district's calendar and must log a minimum of 450 hours during this quarter.  

    NOTE: Secondary candidates whse internship extend into April will be issued an "In Progress (IP)" grade at the end of WWU's Winter quarter (March) while continuing in the remaining weeks of the internship. The IP grade will be converted to a Satisfactory once all internship requirements are met.  This does not impact your Winter graduation status.

Everett Master In Teaching (MIT)

Everett MIT candidates complete two quarters of internship work in the same classroom. Quarter 1 is a part time practicum and Quarter 2 is a full time (1.0 FTE) internship.

  • Quarter 1--Fall Practicum: Officially starts when the WWU quarter begins.  Interns will spend at least 25 hours in the classroom. Intern's schedule should be arranged between intern and cooperating teacher.
  • Quarter 2--Winter Full time internship: Starts when teachers return to work in early-January and ends after 14 full teaching weeks (with students) are completed. That end date will vary by district assignment. In most circumstances, this will be mid-April after the district spring break.  Interns will work full time in the classroom and will follow the school district's calendar and must log at least 450 hours during this quarter.

Grade Level and Location Choices

When you apply, you will indicate your preferred grade ranges and districts. We will do our best to place you according to your preferences, however these requests are not guaranteed.

Most placements are local:

Bellingham campus:

  • Whatcom County
  • Skagit County

Everett campus:

  • Snohomish County
  • King County

If you wish to complete your internship outside of one of these areas, you will complete the "Out of Area Request" section of the Internship Application.
